General Information

Organic Chemistry Department is one of the oldest in Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, it was founded in 1891. The first Head of the Department (1891-1934) was Prof. Reformatsky, a well-known organic chemist. Many prominent scientists worked at the Department since then, see Personalised History.

Organic Chemistry Department is a leading Department at the Faculty of Chemistry of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University. The teaching staff currently includes 5 professors, 5 docents and 2 junior lecturers. The professors and docents teach general subjects: organic chemistry, stereochemistry, physical methods in chemistry, material science for bachelors, as well as a number of specialized courses for bachelors, specialists and masters of chemistry. The teaching courses are organized under two divisions of the Department: "Organic Chemistry" and "Chemistry of Natural Products". The main specialized subjects are: organic reaction mechanisms, asymmetric synthesis, computers in scientific research, history of chemistry, different aspects of medicinal chemistry, advanced spectroscopic methods, advanced synthetic methods, planning of organic syntheses, physical methods in study of natural products, chemistry of peptides and proteins, combinatorial chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, chemistry of nucleic acids, nanochemistry and nanotechnology, stereochemistry and chemistry of sugars, organic chemical nomenclature and others. Content of the subjects and the subjects themselves change every year accordingly to the latest achievements in the science. Scientific seminars and practicum constitute considerable part of the teaching program.

The scientific research on the Department is made by 10 Doctors of Chemical Sciences and 20 Candidates of Chemical Sciences. Up to ten aspirants (PhD students) conduct their scientific investigations at the Department. The Scientific Board at the Organic Chemistry Department Grants the Scientific Degrees of Candidate of Chemistry and Doctor of Chemistry by specialty "organic chemistry", "bioorganic chemistry". The research is traditionally made in the area of nitrogen-, sulphur- and oxygen-containing aromatic heterocyclic compounds. Relatively new directions of the research are: synthesis of unnatural amino acids and peptidomimetics; design and synthesis of fluorescent probes, fullerenes and nanotubes. Students of the Department actively participate in the research; this is a part of the teaching process. At the end of the study at the Department the students present the scientific results obtained by them under supervision of the professors, docents or aspirants.

The Professors and scientists of the Department collaborate with leading scientific centers of the world, for example, with University Chemical Laboratory, Cambridge, UK; University of Strasbourg, France; Toulouse University, France; Karlsruhe University, Germany; University of Cologne, Germany; University of Zaragoza, Spain; Rostock University, Germany. Professors, docents and lecturers of the Chemistry Department are the authors of many textbooks, among them are:
